Punjab to Build 358 Underground Water Storage Tanks to Manage Rainwater

The Punjab government has announced a major environmental and infrastructure initiative to improve rainwater drainage and groundwater recharge across the province. The project was reviewed during a high-level meeting chaired by the Chief Minister to evaluate progress on the Punjab Development Programme, clean water initiatives, and the Model Village Project.

Rainwater Management Project

According to officials, the initiative will be implemented for the first time in Punjab to address the growing problem of urban flooding and declining groundwater levels.

Under the plan:

• 34 large underground storage tanks will be built in major cities for rainwater drainage.

• 324 roadside underground tanks will be constructed to quickly remove water accumulated on roads.

• Recharge wells will be installed alongside the tanks to improve groundwater levels.

Authorities stated that rainwater collected in the storage tanks will be treated through water treatment plants and reused for agricultural irrigation, helping conserve water resources.

Wastewater Treatment Expansion

The government also plans to establish 328 wastewater treatment plants across Punjab to treat wastewater and make it suitable for reuse in agriculture.

Officials say the move will support sustainable water management and reduce environmental pollution.

Major Infrastructure Development

During the briefing, authorities highlighted several large-scale development initiatives under the Punjab Development Programme, including:

• 6,100 kilometres of streets to be paved

• 3,498 kilometres of sewerage lines to be laid

• Streetlights to be installed at 14,679 locations

• 33 million square feet of tuff tiles to be laid in streets and pathways

To improve drainage and municipal services, the government will also provide 526 modern machines and tractors.

Officials also informed the meeting that a new sewerage pipeline manufacturing factory in Lahore has been installed, which will produce pipelines with a lifespan of up to 100 years.

Projects under the Punjab Development Programme have already started in:

• Gujrat

• Okara

• Jhang

• Multan

• Sialkot

Additional projects will soon begin in:

• Jhelum

• Gujranwala

Rural Sanitation and Model Village Project

Under the Punjab Rural Sanitation Improvement Programme, drainage systems will also be developed in rural areas.

Development schemes worth Rs59 billion will be implemented in 485 villages under the Model Village Project, while work has already started in 200 villages.

The programme includes:

• Cleaning wastewater ponds

• Installing wastewater treatment plants

• Supplying treated water to agricultural fields

Clean Drinking Water Initiative

The Chief Minister directed authorities to ensure the functionality of filtration plants for the provision of clean drinking water.

She also instructed that paved streets in villages should be prioritized and that drainage projects must be completed before the monsoon season.
